Tier 1 of the new PBS (Points Based System) Implemented: As of 29th February 2008 the Home Office will no longer be taking applications from applicants within the UK for the HSMP (Highly Skilled Migrant Programme) or the IGS (International Graduates Scheme). Applicants will have to apply to switch or extend under Tier 1 (General) of the new PBS. The points scoring assessment remains largely unchanged from the most recent version of the HSMP scoring system with 2 notable exceptions for initial applications. Applicants can no longer apply under the MBA provision as it is expected that candidates with an MBA will meet the points criteria in the usual manner. Also, a maintenance requirement has been added, to ensure that candidates have enough money to support themselves in the UK whilst looking for work.
Candidates that have completed a degree at a recognised UK university within the last 12 months will still be able to apply under Tier 1 of the PBS under similar rules to the previous IGS.
Those wishing to extend an HSMP that they currently hold will also be able to apply through Tier 1. Transitional arrangements remain in place for self-employed applicants that find it difficult to meet the points criteria.
Tier 1 will be implemented for all initial applications from India on 1st April 2008. All new HSMP applicants applying from other countries outside the UK will continue to apply for the HSMP under the current rules until further notice.
Any questions about the PBS and Tier 1 should be directed to hsmp@etci.co.uk
