Skills Shortage Occupations - nurses:

The Home Office have announced that they will be eliminating 'general nurses' from the Skills Shortage Occupations list. So, from 14th August 2006 it will become more difficult for foreign nurses to enter the UK.

The "all nurses" category will be substituted with a specified listing:

Nurses employed or engaged in the NHS at band 7 or 8 of Agenda for Change, or those employed or engaged in one or more of the following specialties:

  • Audiology
  • Sleep/respiratory physiology
  • Neurophysiology
  • Cardiac physiology
  • Operating theatre nursing
  • Clinical radiology
  • Pathology
  • Critical care

Midwives will also remain on the list.

Those applying to the UK for a visa in these categories will be required to declare which of the Agenda for Change bands or nursing specialties they wish to qualify under.

All work permit applications for UK entry received on or after 14 August for nursing posts, other than those listed above, will need to be subject to a full resident labour test.
