Tier 1 of the new PBS (Points Based System) Implemented
As of 29th February 2008 the Home Office will no longer be taking applications from applicants within the UK for the HSMP (Highly Skilled Migrant Programme) or the IGS (International Graduates Scheme).

Increased penalties for those employing illegal immigrants
The Home Office has announced a new policy, which will take effect in February of 2008, which will increase fines and introduce custodial sentences for employers who hire immigrants who do not have the legal right to work in the UK.

HSMP rule overturned for overseas doctors
The Department of Health recently released guidance that overseas doctors already within the UK should not be interviewed for new positions if their HSMP visa was due to expire after 1st August 2007.

Romanian and Bulgaria Working Restrictions
Romanians and Bulgarians will be allowed limited access to the UK from January 2007. They will have a right of residence for just 3 months on an unrestricted basis provided that they are a student, a self employed person or are self sufficient and not economically active.

The new "Tier 2" comprises of skilled personnel with a job offer such as doctors, nurses, dentists, teachers, and engineers.
